Andrea Parkins is a composer, sound artist and electroacoustic musician who engages with interactive electronics as compositional/performative process, exploring strategies related to Fluxus’ ordered, yet ephemeral activities. An integral participant of NYC sound art and experimental music communities, and worldwide – she is known for her pioneering gestural/textural approach to her electronically-processed accordion and customized live sound processing. Described as a "sound-ist," of "protean," talent by music critic Steve Smith (The NYT), her laptop electronics and Fender-amped accordion create fields of lush harmonics, noisy concretized disruption, and sculpted electronic feedback.
Parkins' works include electroacoustic and electronic music compositions, multi-diffusion sound installations, and sound for dance, video and intermedia performance. Her work has been presented at the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Kitchen, Diapason sound gallery, and Experimental Intermedia, Mexico City’s First International Sound Art festival; Museet Samtidskunst in Roskilde; Unsound in Krakow; q-02 in Brussels, NEXT in Bratislava; and Cyberfest in St. Petersburg, among others. Parkins also records/performs internationally as a solo artist and has collaborated with innovators such as Otomo Yoshihide, David Watson, John Butcher, and Wilco guitarist Nels Cline among many others. Her work has been published by Important Records, Atavistic, and Creative Sources. Parkins's primary project is a series of live audiovisual works inspired by Rube Goldberg's circuitous machines. Her work has received support from American Composers Forum, New York State Council on the Arts, French-American Cultural Exchange, Q-02 Workspace for Experimental Music and Sound Art (Brussels), Media Arts Assistance Fund (NY), Meet the Composer, Harvestworks, and the Frei und Hanseastadt Hamburg Kulturbehoerde in Germany.
