Inspiring Unity through Music
Growing up in Kuala Lumpur, the densely-populated capital city of Malaysia, Amirah Ali was constantly exposed to the juxtapositions of different cultures and different viewpoints. It is this exposure to diversity that has framed who Amirah Ali is today: both as an artist and as a human being. Being born with mixed parentage, Amirah’s music reflects the diversity of her unique Malaysian background. It personifies the idea of West meeting East, fusing traditional music instruments and elements with the modern harmonies of Western music thus creating a sound for herself that is exploratory, bold and courageous. With a warm unique voice that is subtle yet enticing, her music draws you into the quiet bravery seen in her lyrics, where she speaks of diversity, equality, acceptance and unity not only through her lyrical content, but through her music arrangements as well.
Amirah has garnered local and international recognition for her songwriting and performing. Her debut single, “Katakanlah”, has won many international songwriting awards including runner up for the International Songwriting Competition (ISC) 2011 beating 15,000 entries from 115 countries, finalist for the John Lennon Songwriting Competition 2010 and as winner for the Independent Music Awards 2014 under the Instrumental Music Category. In 2013, “Katakanlah” - Trance Remix (a collaboration with DJ Duo, Scandra, from Germany) reached the semi-finals for the International Songwriting Competition (ISC) 2013. In 2012, Amirah walked away with 7 nominations, the highest of the year, and 2 awards for ‘Best Female Artist’ and ‘Best Performance’ at the Voize Independent Music Awards (VIMA), which represents artists from all over Southeast Asia. Amirah was also awarded ‘Best Female Artist’ for the International Acoustic Music Awards (IAMA) 2014 for her song “Queen of My Heart”, written for her mother.“Katakanlah” and “Sailing the Sahara” were also featured in “Malaysia’s World Music Artist” compilation album under MARTRADE (Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation) 2013.
