Dr. Muirhead talks about her love of reading, early school experiences and race relations in Hyde Park and Bloomington. She discusses dorm life, campus social life and recalls participating in a march with Martin Luther King, Jr. in Chicago and the effects of his messages and his visits on her and her community, both in Chicago and in Bloomington. Muirhead recalls influential faculty and classes, the decision to return to campus to teach, and incidents of racism on campus. There is background noise at different parts of the recording and an abrupt transition that are original to the analog format.
