Horenberger Jack by Ames2001 published on 2018-07-24T20:03:58Z An undated interview with Jack Horenberger, presumably by Jerry Bidle of IWU Communications. At some point Horenberger refers to President Eckley being in office, so the span of time is 1968-1986. Bidle says the focus of this interview will be recollections other than Horeberger's athletic career. He mentions going to Marquette his first year and then transferring to IWU in 1933. He was a Business major and although he didn't plan on joining a fraternity he speaks highly of the positive aspects of being involved, and not just with his own group, Phi Gamma Delta. He shares remembrances of faculty members William Beadles and Wilbert Ferguson, and Presidents Wiley Brooks, William Shaw, Fred Young, Merrill Holmes, Lloyd Bertholf, and Robert Eckley. The buildings on campus when he arrived were the Memorial Gym, Hedding Hall, the Science Building, Presser, and a "hang out" building that later became the Phoenix Theatre. He also recalls the fire at Hedding Hall, when he was a new coach. The team had a basketball game that night and he didn't call the game off. He later regretted it but also noted that it's destruction spurred changes to the campus facilities. Locations of fraternity houses are also mentioned as is the practice of Chapel Hour, and the impact of World War II. This recording was compiled from two sides of a cassette tape and features an abrupt transition, original to the analog format. The quality of sound is also uneven due to the condition of the original tape.
