This is certainly one of the more unique sets I have ever shared, and one that I thoroughly enjoyed playing from start to finish. Shying away from the usual shades of house and techno that I normally gravitate towards as a DJ, this journey of rhythm and sound flows with vocals, percussion, and instrumentation from various African, South American, and Middle Eastern regions in the first half...with a particular emphasis on DRUMS. The second half of the mix establishes a more electronic trajectory, with lots of cosmic disco, electro, industrial and psychedelic energy. In short, very left field for a Cityfox party.
Over the past few years, Cityfox has established itself as one of the premier producers of underground electronic music events in NYC. I started off as a fan of their label, then their parties (and have been to nearly every one of them since, including the epic first loft party they threw in November 2012). I was first invited to play for them in December 2014, for their "Diynamic presents The Maze" event, which featured Solomon, Adriatique, Stimming, David August, and others...an excellent party, which happened to be at the same cavernous venue. In fact, I even played in the same room this time as I did a year before.
What you are listening to now is my 2-hour set from The Cityfox Experience, which was a massive multi-floor warehouse party in Brooklyn with 4 stages of music, a myriad of interactive art and immersive lighting, plus thousands of very happy, adventurous people who danced all night. Many, many talented people worked hard to make this party happen, and it showed...the vibes were off the charts.
On this occasion, I was encouraged to play an "experimental" set in the "Sly Bar": a great sort of speakeasy-feeling lounge on the 4th floor with not only its own bar and sound system, but also plush couches, ottomans, fireplaces, lanterns and a perched parrot (!)...a fitting complement to the big room tech house on the other stages. I opened the room, yet from early there was great dance floor energy going on...by the time Dubtribe Sound System came on after me, it was a proper party within a party...still smiling :)
Getting back to DRUMS: I love drums...always have, always will. I've been a drummer since I was a kid, when I got a little drum set for my 6th birthday. My style of mixing probably has a lot to do with my foundation as a drummer. I like to layer sounds...prolonged blends between different complementary rhythms and melodies, staying in harmony, and keeping the flow. I often approach selection and programing the same way a group of musicians having a jam session might approach playing together spontaneously. That said, aside from some impromptu African-inspired moments I've had playing at Members Only this year, this was essentially my first time playing music like this out in ages...years, actually. I had so much fun...what a treat.
Enjoy the listen...and for those of you that were there, Thank You for taking the ride with me!
Until next time...
