Born and raised in Hong Kong, Leung Pak Hei, Alvin is currently a year three Music student in the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). He is the recipient of Chung Chi College FLY Award (2017/18), Rioja Group Scholarship (2017/18), Tong Tik Sang Memorial Scholarship (2017/18), Ng Tai Kong Memorial Scholarship (2017/18), Chung Chi College Class Scholarship (2017/18), CUHK Dean’s List (2016/17) and Kong Yue Kau Memorial Scholarship (2016/17).
Alvin is a composition student of Prof. Victor Chan Wai-kwong, Prof. Wendy Lee Wan-ki, Dr. Lo Hau-man and Mr. Ricky Tse Kin-chuen; he has also joined the composition masterclass by Jean-Philippe Vanbeselaere. He received second prizes in New Generation 2014 and 2016 (co-hosted by the Hong Kong Composers’ Guild and RTHK Radio 4) with the string quartet Hyper Dance and saxophone octet Long Night, Short Dreams respectively; his wind quintet Martial Arts Contest on Mount Hua was also selected in New Generation 2018. Between the Virtual and the Actual for Chinese plucked strings and percussion ensemble, besides, was selected for Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra’s “Music from the Heart 2018”. His works were also premiered in CUHK Bauhinia Concert 2015, 2016, 2017. His compositions have been performed by various Hong Kong local music groups, such as Hong Kong Wind Kamerata, Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Contrast Trio, Hong Kong Saxophone Ensemble and Romer String Quartet. Alvin is one of the composers-in-residence of The World Music Ensemble from 2018. In August 2018, Alvin was selected as one of the composers to attend highSCORE Festival in Pavia, Italy, in which his work Melancholie was premiered by Trio Mythos. In the same event, he also presented at the masterclass of Dmitri Tymoczko, and was tutored by Amy Beth Kirsten and Sarah Kirkland Snider.
Alvin is a piano student of Dr. Wu Mei Loc Mary. He has taken part in the piano masterclasses of Prof. Daniel Herskovitch. In May 2018, he appeared as a participant of the Le French May Arts Festival Piano Masterclass held in Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall, in which he was coached by Duo Jatekok.
Other than music composition and piano performance, Alvin also takes part actively in various music groups in the CUHK. He was formerly a cellist in Chung Chi Orchestra, one of the conductors of CUHK Student Orchestra, the piano accompanist of CUHK Chung Chi Choir, and the student organizer of CUHK Music Department Early Music Ensemble. Alvin is currently the conductor of PLKCLSCMC Chamber Orchestra, as well as a player in the Hong Kong early music ensemble L’ Artiste, which was the ensemble-in-residence of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2017/18. Starting from September 2017, Alvin volunteered in Noir Music, a musical group consisted of mainly students from Hong Kong Ebenezer School (a school for students with visual disabilities), as a cellist. Alvin was also an assistant teacher of Tuen Mun Joint Schools Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) Music Course in 2017. Alvin would like to further explore the infinite possibility of music in the future.
