Each painting is a unique work and also represents a unit of sound. The installation pattern on the South wall of the gallery is structured in a Piano Roll form using the Morse Code sequence for the word “MUSIC __ .._ … .. _._.” at the frequency A2. That was the starting point for developing this exhibition. This pattern is then augmented with additional note-paintings forming visual chords that correspond to the audio created by myself and Philippe Gerber. This exhibition is built around the aesthetic underpinnings of Fractals and Complexity Theory and the relationships between the use of visual and auditory properties of Morse and Piano Roll code. The ultimate task of this exhibition is to compose chaos. Like all things in Nature, the expression of complexity is uniqueness constructed with recurring patterns. About The Painting These paintings have been a response to an ongoing question: “How do you answer the light”. When they are singular, and lived with in natural changing light, they pose this question repeatedly. Just when you feel certain of an answer, it is quickly replaced by another question. Their presence rises and falls according to the light, like the units of sound code that they represent in the installation. Singularly, they are a slow read. They are chaos composed, fixed and random. I call the series Lux Coda, but I have yet to come to a conclusion. About The Music The audio for the painting exhibition FRACTAL FREQUENCIES was devised but taking the words MUSIC and translating it into a Morse Code sequence __ .._ … .. _._. The Morse Code was assigned a note duration of three and one beats as well as pitch and different midi instruments in a music sequencer. After establishing the sequence, the line of Morse notes were further augmented to form chords and a third note length of two beats was added to proportionally refer to Fractal patterns and proportions. Philippe Gerber and I then worked with these patterns that were the structure that we built our sounds around. I took the sounds and processed them in various ways and we added our own brand of chaos to them. We did not surrender ourselves to the rigidness of the core system but accompanied and augmented it and breathed some aesthetic life into the tracks. There are audible similarities underpinning the expressive differences. Like all things in Nature, the expression of complexity is uniqueness constructed with recurring patterns.
