Daniel Leuenberger a.k.a. Almacalma, was born in Brighton (UK) in 1980. He grew up in the Swiss Alps, at the very foot of the Matterhorn, until his chilean mother decided it was time to go back to Chile. It was here, during his teenage years, that Daniel had his first encounters with electronic dance music, at underground parties, with yet unknown DJs such as Luciano playing at secret locations in downtown Santiago. In 1999, during a trip to Patagonia, Daniel went to his first outdoor trance party, which was the beginning of a whole new chapter! Today, Almacalma’s sets reflect both his uncompromising obsession for a good groove and his nature-loving, spiritual outlook on life.
After 8 fulfilling years, growing his chilean roots, Daniel decided to return to Switzerland in the year 2000 and started collecting the grooviest tracks he could lay his ears on. After many years of musical experimentation, Daniel’s first dj-sets as Almacalma resonated through the Swiss forests in the summer of 2008. He started playing his progressive minimal sound at the end of psychedelic trance parties. “I like playing on sundays, by daylight, at the end of the line-up…people are usually ready for slower beats, they find fresh energy in the grooves and the melodies. It usually means I play for smaller crowds, but witnessing the change of energy is very rewarding. I always keep it progressive with a pinch of psychedelia, I’m a trancer after all!” In his 5 years as Almacalma, Daniel has played along-side artists such as Electrypnose, Sensual Squeak, Philharmonica, Terranostra, at such amazing events as the Somuna Festival and Timegate. Today, Almacalma also enjoys playing progressive trance, but despite his obsession for the groovy side, his tolerance level for modern offbeat progressive is quite low. When it comes to progressive trance, Almacalma’s style is rolling and solar. He’s currently working on his new dj project under the name Bangoa, which focuses on driving, uplifting, and yes…groovy…psytrance.
For the last two years Daniel has been traveling back and forth between Switzerland and Brazil with his wife Svea and their two adorable kids. They run TRIBU, a vegetarian restaurant and beach-bar on the beautiful island of Tinhare, in Bahia. During the brazilian summer, they hold weekly trance gatherings for an international crowd of passionate sun-seekers.
In an effort to expand his horizon of musical possibilities, Daniel joined forces with swiss-based label Moonloop Records in the summer of 2013. Get ready for lift-off and…see you on the dancefloor!
