Jealous of Herself: written to be performed live by Alice Boyd published on 2016-11-27T15:00:11Z The first interlude of four that I wrote for 'Jealous Of Herself', directed by Ell Potter, translated by Sarah Grunnah (inspired by Harley Erdman's translation). “Time moves so fast That if you’re always alert, You might witness a woman Metamorphosise before your eyes” A woman's fiancé does not recognise her. To satisfy his desires, she creates an alter-ego to fulfil his fantasy of the perfect woman. NowNow Theatre presents the English-language world premiere of Tirso de Molina’s ‘Jealous of Herself’ in association with the ETC. This new adaptation by Sarah Grunnah (inspired by Harley Erdman's translation) engages with themes of female objectification, the projection of male fantasy, and the dichotomy between dreamer and dreamed, all set in the labyrinthine streets of 17th century Madrid. Alice Boyd has composed original music that is sung onstage by an ensemble, their vocals merge together into haunting harmonies that traverse the seventeenth century setting and the modern performance. This is a production that is truly creative in its incorporation of the arts – at one point Boyd appears on stage bearing an electric guitar, at other moments there are castanets." http://oxfordstudent.com/2016/11/22/plot-labyrinthine-streets-madrid-jealous-preview/ 'The music, composed by Alice Boyd, helps with the seamless nuances of tone as the interludes of performances by the ensemble (Boyd, Anushka Chakravarti, Cara Pacitti, Ell Potter and James Tibbles) are in turns enchanting, ominous and bittersweet. The choreography, by Emmy Everest-Phillips, is best displayed in a pas de deux between Chakravarti and Tibbles that emphasises both lyricism and aggression, as the two dancers portray power dynamics through energetic contemporary dance.’ 'The beautiful, haunting music of the final scene will stay with you long after the play ends’ http://www.cherwell.org/2016/11/24/review-jealous-of-herself/ 'Director Ell Potter has made the interesting choice of incorporating music and movement at key points between scenes. Accompanied by a small live band, the ensemble actors punctuate the play with songs from a beautiful original soundtrack composed by Alice Boyd. This – in addition to the decision to dress them in mime-style outfits and make up, which offset a lovely minimalist set by Harriet Bourhill – offered a significantly more unsettling edge to what was otherwise a light-hearted production’ https://oxfordopeningnight.com/2016/11/23/review-jealous-of-herself/ Genre Folk & Singer-Songwriter Contains tracks Jealous Of Herself: Interlude I (demo) by Alice Boyd published on 2016-11-21T17:02:02Z Jealous Of Herself: Interlude II (demo, feat. bad Spanish!) by Alice Boyd published on 2016-11-27T14:50:05Z Jealous of Herself: Interlude III (demo) by Alice Boyd published on 2016-11-27T14:50:37Z Jealous of Herself: Interlude IV (demo) by Alice Boyd published on 2016-11-27T14:51:19Z
