Le reel du Globe by Alexandre Soulodre published on 2013/07/20 13:33:18 +0000 Written for my grandfather before he passed, this reel embodies him musically as much as I could make it. Raised in rural Manitoba, he and his brothers would play jigs and reels with Grandpa taking care of either the fiddle or the guitar, hence the inclusion of those two instruments. He worked as a mechanic at the Globe and Main newspaper for most of his working life so I used a press sample for the bass drum and a paper roller for the high hat. The steel mallets represent his aptitude as a handyman while the wooden ones, his dedication to St. Joseph the carpenter. The three-stanza pattern is repeated thrice: one for each of his nine kids. Finally I've left the embellishments to the discretion of whoever performs this piece.
