Silence Inside Sound by Alex Kirt published on 2014-11-24T01:00:29Z "Silence Inside Sound". This is a sound art project that I created as an MFA graduate student in the Audio Arts course at SIUC. It is a soundscape of the internal realms of audio recording and playback equipment. These sounds were captured using a stereo pair of small cap condenser microphones. The audio units recorded are a Wind-Up Victrola, an tin toy phonograph player, a Rek-O-Kut recording lathe, a solid state record player, a stereo tube amplifier, a reel to reel tape recorder, a cassette player, an ADAT multitrack recorder, a DAT tape player, a computer hard drive, an iMac, a CD player, and a minidisc player. I envisioned this soundscape as an audible accompaniment to my photographic series "Sound City", which features landscape style photographs of electronics circuit board grids and other audio electronic components that, to my eye, bear a strong resemblance to aerial photographs of cityscapes.
