Dr. H. H. Gilbert was a Canadian missionary doctor in China, head of “St. Paul’s Hospital” in Kweiteh, now the city of Shangqiu, Henan. When the Japanese army was steamrolling through northern China in 1938, Dr. Gilbert converted the hospital grounds into a refugee camp to protect local residents from the atrocities that had followed Japanese occupation in Nanjing and elsewhere. At the time, foreign-owned properties in China enjoyed some protection under international law, but no one’s safety could be guaranteed in the path of the Japanese invasion. This is Dr. Gilbert’s own memoir of that fateful year, narrated in Chinese (Mandarin) by “Dashan” aka Mark Rowswell, whose own grandfather had served as a missionary doctor in the same hospital in the 1920s.
