Kweiteh Memoirs 归德府回忆录 by Dashan 大山

河南东部归德府古城外曾有一家教会医院，名为“圣保罗医院”，既今日商丘市第一人民医院的前身。上世纪20年代著名“国际幽人”大山的爷爷远渡重洋，成为圣保罗医院的第一任加拿大籍医生。追踪前辈足迹“寻根”的时候大山认识了圣保罗医院另一位加拿大医生郭海伯大夫的后代。郭大夫1926年接替大山的爷爷，在归德府生活工作了十几年，后来给后代留下了详细的回忆录，讲述抗日期间在归德府的亲身经历。
1938年春夏日本侵略军攻占华北，担任医院院长的郭海伯大夫拒绝撤离的命令，决定利用“涉外场馆”的特权建立避难营，保护当地中国百姓的生命安全。

Dr. H. H. Gilbert was a Canadian missionary doctor in China, head of “St. Paul’s Hospital” in Kweiteh, now the city of Shangqiu, Henan. When the Japanese army was steamrolling through northern China in 1938, Dr. Gilbert converted the hospital grounds into a refugee camp to protect local residents from the atrocities that had followed Japanese occupation in Nanjing and elsewhere. At the time, foreign-owned properties in China enjoyed some protection under international law, but no one’s safety could be guaranteed in the path of the Japanese invasion.

This is Dr. Gilbert’s own memoir of that fateful year, narrated in Chinese (Mandarin) by “Dashan” aka Mark Rowswell, whose own grandfather had served as a missionary doctor in the same hospital in the 1920s.
