East vs West by Agent of Change published on 2012-10-11T15:03:39Z Flamenco is a culture of music, dance and song born out of the mingling of Romani, Moorish, Jewish and Andalucian cultures in southern Spain. The flamenco dance style closely resembles the Kathak classical dancing of northern India - which makes some sense, as Romani people emigrated from India (around 900 years ago). In the 15th century, when the Catholic monarchs defeated the Arab rulers of Spain, the Jews, Moors and Romani people were all severely persecuted. Many took refuge in the mountains, where the authorities couldn't reach them. It was here that flamenco culture was born. In the 20th century, with flamenco having become a globally popular art-form, it has been fused with Latin American, African and European music, making it a truly global culture. This beat tape aims to take the fusion one step further, mixing hip-hop beats with samples of classic flamenco guitar records.
