Buddy Lea by ABCSpeakingOut published on 2012-05-08T00:28:17Z Retired Aboriginal soldier, Buddy Lea was 26 when he found himself in the middle of the Battle of Long Tan on August 18th 1966. He was patrolling with 6RAR's D Company when fighting broke out in a rubber plantation. For three and a half hours in torrential rain and mud, the 6RAR fought against an unknown number of North Vietnamese troops. It wasn't until after the fighting had stopped that the 108 Australian diggers realised they'd narrowly survived against a regiment of two and half thousand North Vietnamese soldiers. Buddy was shot three times while trying to pull a mate to safety and spent five months in hospital recovering.
