So picture a warm Summer night, just at the beginning of Monday the 22nd of July ('13), in the "City of Lights" (aka Paris, France) where we find 2 American guys out on the town. Both of them are musicians; (one an amazing vocalist, the other a pretty decent keyboardist who you could also also call a pianist and producer). The Vocalist has planned to go to a late-night jam session at the world-famous Duc des Lombards jazz club (on par with the likes of London's Ronnie Scott's or New York's Blue Note), and the keyboardist tags along to catch the performance.
Upon arriving, they are greeted to the sounds of a jazz trio consisting of a saxophonist, upright bassist, and a drummer who is also the bandleader and the night's host. The Keyboardist had considered even accompanying the Vocalist, provided he knew which song it would be, and play on the beautiful grand piano that the club had there, plus it would be his first time ever playing there, allowing him the honor of joining the ranks of the legendary as well as aspiring artists who had graced that stage. To his surprise and slight disappointment, the Keyboardist discovers instead of the magnificent grand piano, there instead was a Hammond B3 organ...as in the REAL acoustic, old school double keyboard with drawbars and foot pedals deal with the huge wooden amplifier that also could give it that churchy tremolo at the flip of a switch.
Well, the Vocalist was certainly ready, willing, and able (especially if any of you heard the first singer who went on before he did lol *digression*) and he was determined to let loose, with or without the Keyboardist to accompany him. But, the Keyboardist finally welcomes the challenge to play the beastly instrument, which he had never previously ever played in a live gig, nor for a church (as he never played for a church, ironically), and had only really messed around with one after church services, as a much younger man, where he would try to decipher its many features and sounded more like the guy in Soulive, and maybe a few times like a really rough, young wannabe Jimmy Smith lol
Nonetheless, the Vocalist signals to the bandleader, motioning that he wants to perform next and nodded to the Keyboardist to come on stage to join him when he got the "okay", while the nice lady who was sitting next to them graciously obliges to record the moment with the Vocalist's iPhone, though with her finger over the lens the entire time, the recording is relegated to just becoming an audio performance lol
The Keyboardist (now Organist) sits at the large instrument, looks it up and down, and takes a breath, then whispers to the bassist they would play in C minor. The Vocalist gives the drummer instructions in French to groove instead of jazz swing, and then the moment begins and goes a little something like this...
