This is an entry to Disquiet Junto Project 0056: matter of time
….asking for a track which records the sound of clock, and makes something of it, and tries to get at the nuance of its internal mechanism.
Using several piezos and a contact mic I recorded the sound of two wristwatches a pocket watch and a clockwork stopwatch to see what would give the best sound. Not having a decent, clean pre amp all the sounds were pretty noisy when brought up to listening volume. The path of subtle acoustic exploration was hampered a bit by this and so I was forced to go down the noise route. I find this with Junto projects and their 4 day life span -there is one chance to record then you go with what you have.
I chose 3 out of the six 30 second takes and started chopping and layering. The effects were largely guitar amp simulations with reverb and overdrive. I tried a few early mixes at different settings then decided to add these mixes in and set the original tracks back to clean. After a few hours chopping and mixing I found some kind of shape I liked and a way the thing could get noisier and still reveal subtle acoustic shifts in the mix.
