Yann Novak is a multi-disciplinary artist living and working in Los Angeles. Through the use of sound, light and space, he explores how these intangible materials can act as catalysts to focus our awareness on the present moment and alter our perception of time. Novak's work, whether conceptual or rooted in phenomenon, are informed by his investigations of presence, stillness and mindfulness. His works can be experienced as architectural interventions, sound diffusions, audiovisual installations and performances, durational performances, concerts and recorded sound-works.
Novak has presented his installation work through solo exhibitions at 323 Projects (US), Armory Center for the Arts (US), Jack Straw New Media Gallery (US), Las Cienegas Projects (US), Lawrimore Project (US), Soundfjord (UK) and in two person exhibitions at the Henry Art Gallery (US), Pøst (US) and Soil Art Gallery (US). His sound works and scores have been presented internationally as part of multiple group exhibitions and diffusions at venues and events including the American Academy in Rome (IT), Aqua Art Miami (US), California Museum of Photography (US), File Hipersonica (BR), Gift_Lab (JP), London International Festival of Exploratory Music (UK), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (US), Suyama Space (US), Tanya Bonakdar Gallery (US), TBA Festival (US), Western Bridge (US) and others.
His performance work have been experienced internationally at sound art/electronic music festivals including the AxS Festival (US), Decibel Festival (US), Forward Festival (US), Mutek Festival (CA), Resonant Forms Festival (US), Soundwalk (US) and at art venues and museums including the Human Resources (US), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (US), Machine Project (US), Oboro (CA), The Stone (US), Torrance Art Museum (US) and others.
Novak’s solo and collaborative sound-works have been published on numerous releases on such labels as Dragon’s Eye Recordings (CA), Farmacia901 (IT), Hibernate Recordings (UK), LINE (US), Murmur Records (JP), and Unfathomless (BE). His sound works have also appeared on multiple international sound art and electronic music compilations on labels such as Crónica (PT), Mandorla (MX), Monochrome Vision (RU), The Wire (UK) and others.
As a result of these endeavors, Novak had been invited to numerous residencies including the Environmental Aesthetics Residency (RU), the Espy Foundation Residency (US), the Jental Artist Residency (US) and the Kasini House Studio A Residency (US).
In 2005, Novak re-launched his father’s Dragon’s Eye Recordings imprint with a new focus on limited edition releases by emerging and mid-carrier sound artists, composers and producers. Since its re-launch, Dragon’s Eye Recordings has published over 60 releases and has received critical acclaim.
In recent years Novak has collaborated through select installation, performance and recorded sound-works with Richard Chartier, Robert Crouch, Will Long, Marc Manning, Taisha Paggett, Alex Schweder, Simon Whetham and others.
