The Winter Olympics toboggan back into action with the propulsive but poignant ‘I Miss The Nineties’, which showcases, once again, their canny ability to craft neat pop hooks and soaring choruses. Produced by Paul Hollingsworth of Gold Future Joy Machine and mastered by John Davis (Joy Division, Florence & The Machine, Led Zeppelin and R.E.M.) this outstanding single will be released on CD and CASSETTE (complete with handmade sleeves) and available to download from iTunes, eMusic, Amazon and elsewhere on 14th March 2011. It serves as a further indication of the good things to expect from their already-recorded debut album ‘Profit and Loss’ due out later this year.

Squeezing boisterous guitars, rattling drums and a twist of pure electronic pop into a sub-three minute thrill-ride of a record, ‘I Miss The Nineties’ is The Winter Olympics’ boldest swipe yet at the proper pop charts; a nostalgic nod to the marvels of the 90’s and a red-eyed rumination on good times gone-by. Dedicated to Winona Ryder, Swervedriver and anyone who ever tried to leave the house without a mobile phone, the song extols the virtues of everything from The X Files to Eric Cantona; from nights in with the Sega Megadrive and Nevermind to singles on cassette (hence the band’s decision to make this release available on tape, with a free download code for the gadget-geeks among us). The song is more than a mere nostalgic novelty, however. With a classy melody and clever lyrics, this isn’t the ‘fifty funniest Nineties fads’ from some soul-sucking TV list-show, rather it’s a warning from history that the future might not be quite as good as it used to be.
