About

i like to write songs in my spare time. no real objective other than putting thoughts & feelings down on tape. i play everything on the recordings here, except for a couple of vocal tracks my wife did. i'm not a good singer, but i write words sometimes - other times i keep it instrumental. hope you like something i've written here.

@ggraling: its all me except my wife singing lead.
Details (you asked for it): my kit - ludwig maple classics w/zildjan masterstroke hats and zildjan A custom ride and crash, captured with "not at all close-mic'd" Earthworks condensors for kick and overhead, shure 57 on snare, sennheiser MD421s on the toms, played w/brushes obviously. my nylon string guitar is a cheap Yamaha, stereo condensor mic'd with the same Earthworks condensors. the bass is a 5 string fretless Michael Kelly acoustic bass w/pickup - i mic'd it and ran direct, mixed to taste. the slide parts - an 8 string 'Lil Roy Wiggins' lap steel, ran through a Crate V32 tube amp, mic'd with a sennheiser e609. In case it wasn't obvious, i overdubbed a slide to make the 3rd harmony. Everything was ran into a Mackie Onyx 8-channel preamp (with its own analog to digital converter), except vocals. Her vocals were cut with a Blue Bluebird condensor and mine were with some cheap MXL condensor - but ran into a Universal Audio 6176 channel strip and converted to digital through an Apogee Rosetta 8. The room really played a role in the sound here, I believe - 18 ft ceilings, all concrete surfaces, boomy and reflective as hell. that's why I didn't close mic, I wanted the recording to sound like it was a performance in that space
The process was probably not that interesting to anyone but me - Amy wrote some lyrics and hummed a melody to me and I learned the melody, played around with some of my favorite chords and tried to come up with lots of variations to make it seem less repetitive - the 'even in the dark...' and 'hope next month' parts are very similar, I just used relative major or minor swaps to make the section different, but retain a similar melody. Otherwise, I just followed common chord progression ideas like starting in C, moving to F, moving to G, then moving to Em - but I tried to make it sound less conventional.
Arranging the harmonies and the lead slide was probably the most fun for me. I'm a big ELO and Queen fan (who isn't?) and love their harmonies, so I was kind of trying to emulate them. The slide part is also kind of ELO, maybe some Harrison (Jeff Lynne/George Harrison are kind of interchangeable in this context) - I was just trying to make the 'hook' more interesting melodically by having my vocals and the slide do something slightly different than the lead vocal, but still stay very close.
My favorite aspects of this track: my wife writing and singing is something I want to encourage; it's actually pretty stripped down compared to most of my writing/recording; the melodic interplay between the lead vocals, harmonies, and the slide; & the room sound, we lived in that loft for a little over a year and listening this track will always take me back to the dawn of our marriage :-)

@KillingTime & The Life: Thanks! - like, wind chimes? there is some xylophone in there at one point with crazy delay - but there is a guitar harmonic chiming part in the 2nd verse I hoped was noticable/recognizable - incorporating the melody of the Westminster Chimes

I'm sensing a concept here - am I reading too much into it? All the titles (band name incl) referring to driving - freeway speeding is fast and aggressive, construction junction is slow and shows frustration (like being stuck in a construction zone), swerve to pass having a sudden, abrupt frenzied section - is this all in my head?

DONT SLOW DOWN MIX at 3.21
    on October 18, 2011 12:28

@finiastex: appreciate the listening! The end was tacked on (perhaps haphazardly) because I remembered something I wrote ages ago, but don't have any copies of - so I threw it in there at the end, but I think it might need to be a half step higher to work as part of this tune (e flat major 7 to play off the G minor in the main parts)...
