Protesters took to the streets of Tunisia after the country’s ruling Ennahda party rejected a proposal to dissolve the government. In some parts of the country riots broke out, and reports surfaced that police used tear gas to stem the protests.

The violence began as a result of the assassination of leading opposition figure Chokri Belaid. Political activist Kehena Sraieb worries that if the political strife continues, the country could end up in civil war. Sraieb, who was born and raised in Tunis, has been active in opposition politics since she gained asylum and came to Chicago in 1997. She explains why the country is experiencing so much political unrest.
