Formed in 2010, the rap group is unique in their inventive style and engrossing lyricism, as well as their uniquely dream-like beats. Warrior Monks consists of 3 members: Sulaymon, BrotherOfMoses, and WaMoo Papez.
WaMoo, born Juan Alvarez, is the group's producer. Concocting beats from inter-mixed samples that range from Tujiko Noriko to Beirut and Takako Minekawa, WaMoo invents a grainy sound inside an array of swimming melodies, refined by the creative and rhythmic energies of the group’s MCs.
Sulaymon, born Alexander Thomas, has been rapping since age 12. Of Afro-Turkish heritage, his intercultural influences shine through in his lyricism, the content of which ranges from the Black Panthers to the Black Sea (his name is derived from Suleiman the Magnificent, the sultan of the Ottoman Empire’s Golden Age).
BrotherOfMoses, born Aaron Mouton, counters Sulaymon’s snake-like rhymes with a pungent, funky delivery all his own. Ranging in topics from Phillies blunts to prophecy (BrotherofMoses being a biblical reference to his legal name, Aaron), he fanatically draws on intensive word play and ambiguity in his metaphors, often forcing his listener to sit down and deconstruct his patterns of rhythm and thought.
