This is a performance of Yoko Ono's composition "Lighting Piece", written in 1955 for which the sole instruction is "Light a match and watch till it goes out."
It was performed and recorded for the Disquiet Junto group.
It is interesting that group leader Marc Weidenbaum chose a composition by Ono that does not suggest sound and listening at all, but rather vision. I gave this some thought before proceeding with my interpretation of the work.
For my performance, I set a single match in front on the microphone (Zoom H4n), and used a magnifying glass to concentrate the sun's rays on the tip of the match, starting from the 'bottom' side, slowly using the sun to 'observe' / burn the length of the match.
I had to use eye protection when recording this track to protect from the extremely bright sun spot.
The image is by an unknown artist. I would be happy to give credit, but it wasn't given where I found it.
Here is the original set of instructions for this Junto project:
Disquiet Junto Project 0031: Ono's Match
This week's project takes the opportunity to focus on the art movement known as Fluxus. We'll use as the starting point a 1955 composition by Yoko Ono. Her work is titled "Lighting Piece" and it consists of a single, simple sentence: "Light a match and watch till it goes out." It is one of a number of pieces that Ono produced as part of Fluxus. For this week's Disquiet Junto project, please interpret her instruction as closely or as loosely as you choose.
Deadline: Monday, August 6, at 11:59pm wherever you are.
Length: Your finished work should be as long or short as you wish to make it, though longer than a five minutes seems unlikely.
