Vincent I. Watson - ‘Serene’ - Pyramids of Mars 002
Release Date :
Genre : Ambient / Classical / Experimental / Electronica
Press Release:
Once in a while, something comes along that really grabs your attention...makes you take notice and after a time you grow to love it. Very rarely does something come along that you can call a Masterpiece.
Lets start at the beginning.
Producer Vince Watson has been releasing very high quality dance music on a consistent basis for a long time. There has been quite a few classics amongst them, but circa late 2012 and ‘Serene’, the artists 8th studio album, presents itself like the opening sequence of a long awaited sci-fi movie.
It is the birth of a new species in this enigmatic versatile producers career, and one which announces the arrival of music for TV and film under his full name, Vincent I. Watson.
And so, to that opening sequence.
After 60 seconds of ‘Hidden Behind The Eyes’, you know your into something special. The emotional deep content that Vince is already acclaimed for is there from the start, but its on a new level of detail. ‘Placid’ smoothes things out nicely before the very powerful ‘Sagitaria’ hits like a wall of unleashed beauty. Stunning...’Re-contact’ then bends things into a new reality with some beautifully crafted dub style efx which bring a level of intensity and energy into the journey towards the next 3 tracks, which are jaw droppingly inspiring.
Title track ‘Serene’ is one of those tracks you could listen to for days..its such a powerful piece of music. ‘Out of Reach’ bridges the gap before what is the album’s crowning glory, ‘Celtic Beauty’. With its rising Violin’s and high-octane strings, its anthemic chords and synth lines opitimise the high standard of this album perfectly. ‘Continuum’ sets the tone nicely after such a dramatic burst before the remaining 2 tracks take us somewhat darker and deeper into outer space. ‘Abyss’ is not the kind of track you want to listen to on headphones alone..its more like entering a black hole than deep space, spine tingling stuff but worth the ticket alone....then we come to the final track, which is the only track on the album with any reference to a beat. ‘Open Your Eyes’...is the title suggesting its all been a dream?, or a journey during which you didnt want to see reality?
The album then ends with what can only be described as the moment when you wake up first thing in the morning and see for the first time..as the music rises and rises only to disappears in an instant..very cleverly done. Deafened by silence would be a nice metaphor to use.
Many will compare this work to the likes of Steve Reich, Philip Glass or even Hans Zimmer at times, which is no small credentials to gain, but there is also something elegantly modern and unique about the unavoidable journey it takes you on.
‘Serene’ is not only a highly impressive piece of contemporary electronic music, its also a very important one...as it confirms Watson to be one of the great modern composers/producers in electronic music today.
Not many of his fellow DJ peers on the clubscene today could create something so organic yet so utterly gripping whilst managing to blend Piano’s and deep dark spaces into one powerful yet co-hesive story.
Many words will be used to describe this album - sometimes there are never enough superlatives, but Masterpiece is rarely so fitting as it is here..because that is exactly what ‘Serene’ is.
It is, in fact...a work of art.
