monome hello, we are friends
IDEA:
The graphic provided as inspiration suggested two layers of performance: a background of randomly plotted notes overlaid with a linear melody.
The notion of a line in a graph representing a thread with which one can track the "progress" of a political candidate's temporal march through the maze of public opinion made me think of the string that Theseus used to find his way through the disorienting and -- when first encountered, seemingly random -- physical space of the labyrinth. After slaying his opponent, the monstrous Minotaur, the victor retraces his path back to the real world, raveling up the lifeline and making post hoc sense of the jumbled and chaotic experience of his quest for power.
PERFORMANCE:
Rhythmic notes generated in the FAW Circle synth by the flin Max patch controlled by a monome 256. Melody generated by using multiple control surfaces to play an Arturia CS-80 patch and manipulate settings on the fly.
Recorded live in Reaper using a bit of compression/limiting and some reverb.

@mysterybear: What's wrong with linear for Gods sake? We listen note by note - in time - in a LINEAR DIRECTION! Get real!!!!!

For once, there's some really original sounds going on here! I really like this piece and it's harmonich language. Electronic composers beware - you don't have to fill in the entire sound spectrum to be effective/expessive - range/texture is important. And this means selection!

Has a tragic, medieval quality! Well titled and conceived, an approach and sound style worth exploring further :))

@mysterybear: Gracias...and thanks for noticing the off-tuning which I hoped would add some tension to the mix.

Lyrical, without being too linear. I like the tuning contrasts, too.

This is a wonderful piece - beautiful melody with swells of tension. Mesmerising and a joy to listen to - I want it to go on for an hour. Really liked your approach too, seeing the graph as Theseus' thread.

@Inlet: Gracias! But you're gonna have to pry my cold dead fingers off that 256... ;)

Nice way to achieve interest with a minimum of elements, and to boot it's also a pretty expressive piece. And the string through the Minotaur's maze as inspiration is a nice thought!

Music after my own heart! Done on a grand scale, but with minimalistic orchestration. I absolutely agree with the wise π Dogx: majestic....

Monumental, fatalistic and majestic sounds, Neal! Great work! /HM
