This is a version of the well known Gnossienne no.1.
I learnt to perform the score backwards and recorded it. Then I turned the tape upside down and played it back. I was looking for that aquatic quality you often find in Satie's music. It put me in mind of the well known lines from Eliot's "The Waste Land"
PHLEBAS the Phoenician, a fortnight dead, Forgot the cry of gulls, and the deep seas swell. And the profit and loss.
A current under sea. Picked his bones in whispers. As he rose and fell. He passed the stages of his age and youth. Entering the whirlpool. Gentile or Jew. O you who turn the wheel and look to windward, Consider Phlebas, who was once handsome and tall as you.

Track on "Erik Satie et les nouveaux jeunes" - 2x CD digifile on arbouse recordings (arbou028)
