City Attorney Carmen Trutanich responded to claims by former Los Angeles City Controller Laura Chick that he was a liar and a demagogue by trying to convince KABC 790AM talk show host Doug McIntyre that he had not reneged on his promise to allow the Controller to audit the offices of elected officials to root out fraud, corruption and inefficiency.
Trutanich, however, declined to personally appear on KABC's top-rated morning drive-time show 'McInyre in the Morning,' and instead had his spokesman call in for him. The interview did not go well. Trutanich argued that he had allowed the Controller to audit the Workers Compensation Program set up by his predecessor Rocky Delgadillo. McIntyre pointed out that there is a world of difference between being given permission and having a right. The spokesman then tried to talk over McIntyre by reading a court opinion which did not address the issue; Trutanich lied when he promised to support the Controller's right to audit all elected officials, but once elected he took the position that elected officials could give permission for the audits, but they had the right to refuse.
Trutanich's argument failed to persuade McIntyre who accused Trutanich of being a liar, demagogue and a paper waving bully. McIntyre also reminded listeners that Trutanich had appeared on his show and repeatedly lied, and said that Trutanich will lose; he will not be the next City Attorney.
