[Sounds of Shanghai] Recorded May 10, 2009. This recording was taken on a clear sunny, and very hot Sunday at the Sheshan Basilica, about 45 minutes outside of Shanghai. Situated on the only 'mountain' in Shanghai, this Catholic Basilica and the old Jesuit observatory was built around 1926. There is also a new observatory on the site. As May is a Marian month many Chinese catholic pilgrims flock here to pray and rejoice in silence or in song. This recording was taken at the base of the Basilica where 2 women and a man were offering prayers in front of a cross. Their harmonies are spooky but peaceful. After their prayers you can make out the distant singing of the crowds at the base of the mountain. It is quite a sight to see on a Sunday as there are many tour buses there and it is very lively with activity. The view from the top of the mountain is beautiful on a clear day and offers views of nearby Song Jiang.
Recorded with a Sony PCM-D50.
