@danielthorntonmusic: Humans select who they're going to mate with. Humans are natural. Music is human.

It is most definitely evolution. The computer program introduces random variance and the human voters are just the selecting agent

Absolutely inspiring project. Thank you for pushing the limits of our understanding of changing culture through evolutionary theory! cheers!

@danielthorntonmusic: You (and quite a few experts by the way) may need to question your original definition of Evolution. According to your perspective you didnt evolve either since it was your genes that constructed you...

@uncoolbob: Music is a human art. It only matters to humans.
This is more of an experiment in what "good music" is in my opinion

Sadly, I like the original random sine mixes more than the final results so I'm useless to your experiment

@scaldinghotsoup: Oh yes....it took Nature millions of years to produce the noble, exquisite predator known as the wild wolf....and in a mere 40,000 years, human interference has mutated it into pathetic little creatures like the chihuahua and the pomeranian...considering the state of the world today and the ones who have now risen to dominance and whose lust for wealth and power are threatening to destroy the planet, I would say human-selection is NOT a good thing....

Furthermore, just because something is human-selected does not mean that it isn't evolution. Examples include dogs, drug-resistant bacteria, and the list goes on...

It is evolution. Evolution is the change in the allele (or in this case, character) frequencies of a population over time. This fits that definition.

@danielthorntonmusic: it's a very valid criticism - but we think in the context of music "surviving" within a human inhabited world, as long as we have a good number of listeners (and we did in the experiment and we have even more now), then it's a reasonable analogy to make with natural selection in the living world

danielthorntonmusic at 0.36 on June 19, 2012 22:21
It's not "natural selection" it's HUMAN selection... so it's hardly evolution!
