Buy Hidden Orchestra - Spoken direct from Tru Thoughts http://shop.etchshop.co.uk/releases/TRUDD056/vorka--spoken/626
Premiered by Wax Poetics, “Spoken” is taken from the double A-side single “Vorka”/”Spoken”, which is out on 10th September as the first official single from Hidden Orchestra’s second album, ‘Archipelago’, which follows on 9th October in the USA and 1st October in the rest of the world.
“Spoken” showcases the unique trumpet playing of guest Phil Cardwell, who conjures a mesmerising variety of tones for composer/producer Joe Acheson to use in his process of sampling session musicians instead of records. Unusual and experimental, this delicate, pulsing track is peppered with primal beats, memorable riffs and groove sections, building to a heavy crescendo, and has proven to be one of the most affecting live tracks when dropped into the set in recent months.
It also features birds and waves recorded ashore and from a boat by the very remote Scottish island of North Rona, on a trip Acheson took last summer in the company of Poppy Ackroyd and her father Norman, on a trip to gather sketches for his etchings (including the one of 'Roareim' which we have used on the front cover of the album).
The core quartet of Hidden Orchestra's live act is formed around the duelling drum kits, percussion and electronic pads of drummers Tim Lane and Jamie Graham, completed with piano and violin from Poppy Ackroyd and Acheson’s bass and electronics.
“Vorka” features guest cellist Su-a Lee (who also played on the first album), this time with a unique, shimmering hook played on the musical saw, woven in amongst her many layers of cello. The ethereal and other-worldly sounding track was inspired by band-leader Joe Acheson’s time working on a radio documentary about a Japanese sci-fi novel.
