Tristes Tropiques ("trist troe-peek") is a San Francisco based promoter, dj and composer. With origins in 1990s rave culture, Tristes Tropiques first became interested in music based on vintage synthesizers, drum machines, and samplers after initial exposure to breakbeat hardcore, acid house, and techno. When the early 2000s arrived, the post-punk and Italo Disco revival lured Tristes Tropiques further into the back catalog of forgotten electronic dance, leftfield arrangements, and rhythmic experimentation. As the 2000s transitioned to the 2010s, Tristes Tropiques began assembling original compositions reflective of these varied influences while also working to disrupt established genre boundaries.
Tristes Tropiques has promoted a number of monthly events beginning with the monthly Dance to ZE Beat, specializing in post-punk and mutant disco. After ZE ended, Radiorhythm and Autobahn began, which specialized in balearic, cosmic, and synthesizer oddities. Tristes Tropiques mainly focuses now on Haceteria, which features vintage Detroit Techno, Chicago House, Acid House, Belgian New Beat, as well as showcasing live electronic performance acts.
