Tom first became known in the 1970s as a musician and LGBT activist with the Top 20 hits 2-4-6-8 Motorway and Glad To Be Gay. With the Tom Robinson Band (TRB) he was also a prominent supporter of Rock Against Racism & Amnesty International.

He released 19 albums with various bands between 1975 and 2001 and co-written songs with Elton John, Peter Gabriel and Dan Hartman. Hhad a Top 10 hit in 1983 with War Baby. He is now an award-winning radio presenter at BBC 6 Music.
