Biography
The artist was born in the Midlands, UK where the techno and house scene emerged and spawned in the early nineties. Although his early background in classical music was keeping him busy at that time, it was the analogue and synth sounds of the new electronic scene that made him truly fall in love with music, stimulating his aspirations of becoming a DJ and producer.
Tokash helped to propagate his early passion for house and techno through mix tapes produced by him and then underground pioneers Carl Cox and Sasha. The energy delivered in one early Carl Cox tape inspired him so much that he instantly sold off his trombone to buy a pair of turntables at the age of 17.
Tokash also remembers when the Shamen burst onto the underground scene in 1991 with 'Hyperreal and 'Progen' and their impact on electronic music - "They were true electronic music pioneers - I learnt a great deal about the US House scene with them. The Shamen's collaborations with Joey Beltram and Frankie Bones influenced me to take up music production and composition."
In the mid-nineties he began his career as a producer with a Roland Keyboard and Sampler.
Early career: roadtrip inspiration
A two month roadtrip to Nepal in 1998, prior to moving to London, made a lasting impact on his musical influences. During the trip he was exposed to Tibetan prayers, South East Asian folk songs and the overall soundscape of a remote region in the world. He was invited to DJ at an impromptu gig in a technology-starved 'warehouse rave' in Kathmandu City, armed with just two ready-mixed cassette tapes, which he recalls as a 'spiritual experience'.
He took live recordings during that journey into the wilderness, foothills, lakes, city streets, temples, festivals, jungles, farms and back yards of remote Nepal. The spirit of this roadtrip inspired him to write an unreleased soundscape album which included 'Himalaya: Mountain Pass (Buffalo)', which is currently available on Soundcloud.
Making waves in London
Returning to the UK (and after battling with a serious bout of Nepalese Typhoid Fever) he moved to London in 2000 to join up with the Rythmes Sans Frontieres label, who shared similar interests, and scored numerous DJ residencies throughout London, with the epicentre being Shoreditch.
As a live performer and producer with Rythmes Sans Frontieres and Afrofiesta, Tokash made an outstanding contribution to the London Latin house scene, releasing various singles under Atlantic Jaxx and white labels. If you were in Brick Lane between 2001 -2004 you were more than likely rocking to one of their bone-shaking weekly nights going under the name of 'Sans Frontieres'.
Afrofiesta's most well known single ' Venga Chica'was an instant underground hit on Atlantic Jaxx Records gaining critical acclaim and was 'House record of the Month' in Muzik magazine amongst rave reviews in DJ and Mixmag. Names like Laurent Garnier (“...Nice vibes for summer. Will definitely use this in my DJ sets”), Jimpster (“...just tears up...Excellent stuff”) and Silicon Soul (...we love them all. Venga!”)...also gave it their seal of approval.
