The Music Biz Weekly, a weekly podcast co-hosted by Michael Brandvold & Brian Thompson. Each week we interview movers and shakers in the music business and discuss music marketing techniques for the DIY independent musician.

This week, for the first time ever in the history of this podcast, I recorded an episode without my trusty co-host. Michael was flying through the sky on his way to his annual summer fishing trip in Northern Ontario this week, so I soldiered on without him.

But rather than record a one-man, solo show, I was lucky to be joined by Ian Gibson (http://www.iangibson.com), a trademark, copyright and entertainment attorney in Los Angeles.

Ian approached me after hearing our recent episode (MBW Ep. #116: http://buff.ly/13KcOQ9) with Jeff Price, founder of Audiam, where we dipped our toes into the murky waters of copyright. Since this topic is Ian's area of expertise, it only made sense to invite him onto the show to take our conversation on copyright one step further.

Copyright is the fundamental core of the music business, so it's extremely important for every artist to have at the very least a cursory understanding of the basics involved. So if the concept of copyrights and trademarks are completely foreign to you, then I hope this discussion can at least break the ice for you.

Also, as a thank you to our listeners, Ian has put together a Free PDF download for everyone called "How Copyright Law Gets Musicians Paid". If you visit http://iangibson.com/thornybleeder and join his mailing list you'll get instant access to the free download.

*Ian Gibson, Esq. is an attorney licensed to practice in the state of California. This interview is for informational purposes only and is not intended to constitute legal advice nor create an attorney-client relationship. This material may be considered advertising under applicable state laws.
