3:05: One week after Remembrance Day. The Last Post Fund, an independent agency, administered by Veterans Affairs Canada (fed gov) will not fund a deceased veteran's funeral expenses if the veteran and his/her widow(er) have a combined estate valued at more than $12,015 (excluding the family home, one vehicle and any monies earned during the month of death). A WWII veteran who dies and whose combined estate with his widow is $20,000 and who has debt of $6,000 will not have his funeral covered by The Last Post Fund because he will have $1,985 more in assets than is allowed. This is how we honour the 80 and 90 year old surviving veterans and their spouses in Canada? Green has received letters from widows of WWII war veterans which included demands for repayment of funeral expense from Veterans Affairs Canada because the estate of the deceased veteran was literally just a few dollars north of $12,015.
Guest: Peter Stoffer. Defence critic. NDP (federal)
3:20: The LAST WORD to Callers: So this is how we treat our military veterans in Canada? This is how we treat 80 and 90 year olds who just lost their spouses and who fought for Canada?
3:30 As the possibility of increased military action by Israel against Hamas in Gaza raises international concern, it is Egypt which is at the centre of attempts to broker a ceasefire agreement. The Muslim Brotherhood has extensive (most) political power in Egypt and the new Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi has visited with Hamas leaders in Gaza. What is Egypt's role in the Middle East now? Will it transform from Israel's de-facto ally to an Iran-style enemy of the Jewish State, sharing a border with Israel?
Guest: Michael Petrou. Snr. writer for Maclean's magazine. He has just returned from several weeks in Cairo where he has seen political Islam in action.
Feature article in current Maclean's issue: "Brothers in Charge."
