Need a gift for a gifted musician?
People have always called me Crooks because it is my last name, since giving myself another name seemed like fiction I decided to use it as my alias.
I strive to rap about nothing but the truth, whether it is things I’ve been through, my ambitions, or my attitude towards various trends in hip hop. Primarily, I make music for myself to enjoy. My second priority is to deliver material that people can relate to.
I enjoy sounding different from mainstream artists. My rhymes tend to be more cerebral than the average simile-type rappers’. I find unique instrumentals that speak to me, from independent producers, on which to record.
I started making music as a hobby the summer of 2011. My philosophy is that when making music I should enjoy myself, because when I form a connection with the track I am working on, the result is something I can be proud of.
I am ALWAYS writing in my phone and on paper; one-liners, double entendres, and unique thoughts. Though not all of them make it into the finished products, they give me something to draw inspiration from when writing other material.
Like most people my age in Toronto/ the GTA, finding a career these days is not as easy as previous decades, thus my budget is practically non-existent. However I don’t let that stand in my way. I network with producers worldwide building mutually beneficial relationships resulting in great instrumentals, free of charge.
I began recording with absolutely zero knowledge of music programs or recording. My first track was recorded on my iPhone by playing the instrumental really loud through my sound system, and In hindsight I find it hilarious. Shortly after that my brother bought me my first microphone for Christmas and that same night I taught myself Garage Band. Since then I have researched audio recording practices, and have bought some acoustic equipment.
My best friend since high school has recently started working with me on new tracks, the result of which is higher quality editing and mastering, on an exponential incline. He lives in Huston, Texas and I live in Oshawa, Ontario, so as you can imagine working long-distance on music is quite a challenge, but I’ve never been one to be intimidated by new frontiers. He has formed a friendship with the men behind Area 57 Studios in Texas, and has learned a lot from C-Staxz’ producer Bseale.
We are currently in the process of exploring possible collaborative efforts, while working on completing what I consider to be my first respectable body of work,
“Late Start” (Vol. 2).
I chose the name “Late Start” because countless successful artists have had their musical beginnings during or just after high school, while I focused on my grades and then graduating University. Though I was taught to play the piano, and bass clarinet in my youth, my opinion is that the delay has set me back a few years, as far as a music career.
Nevertheless I’m grateful for the experiences I’ve had along the way, for they have all had a hand in crafting the man I am today.
