How do people describe The Daydream Sound’s music? “Instrumental hip-hop,” “electronic experimental”and“future beats” are terms listeners have used to try and label his sound. Music critics struggle to avoid cliché descriptions like “genre-bending” and “eclectic” in reviewing his sample-infused and uniquely crafted songs.
The son of a DJ, The Daydream Sound (TDS) was DJ-ing himself at the age of ten. While away at university, he came across his first sampler, a used Ensoniq EPS16+. TDS used his appreciation for vintage instruments as a foundation for transforming everyday sounds into original music. Testing the limits of his creativity, TDS began to make music that was further and further from what he was familiar with until he reached the point where he had to make a decision: to continue exploring, or find comfort in making music that had already proven to be successful commercially. TDS set his own way and never looked back.
One distinguishing feature of TDS’s music is how he creates beats, loops, and melodies from “found” sounds — whispers, bird calls, or construction work. It seems like he makes music with anything that appeals to his ear. His music is layered with blends of rhythmic vocals and harmonic tones.
As a reclusive and introverted artist, he connects with people through his music. In sharing his music, he exemplifies why we still use the word “gift” to describe artistic talent.
