Although it's pretty inconsequential both musically and lyrically "The Riddle" has managed to drag me out of what has been a terrible year. I won't bore you with the details but family bereavements added to writer's block have not made for a very happy bedroom musician (I don't count my previous song "The Machinery" as I used samples to create the main riff)

When I'm in these holes, musically, I usually try something different (whether using a different instrument or a new idea) to try and get the creative juices flowing. In this instance I looked to that much maligned era of the early 70's to try and write a pop song from that era. (Todd Rundgren being the primary influence in that direction). Eventually, after numerous false starts, temper tantrums and battles with my head I've ended up with "The Riddle". I'm not sure I've quite succeeded in hitting my brief but this song is important to me because as soon as I'd written it, lots more songs have started to flow. Hopefully a catalyst for better

Lyrically, it's not great as although I like a few lines it doesn't quite hang together as a whole. The idea stemmed from trying to understand what was going on in my wife's mind during our recent bereavements. The images followed on from that. I call her a sphinx without a secret which on reflection is a great title for a song. Nevermind, maybe next time eh?

As always your feedback (positive or negative) is gratefully accepted

Lyrics

Washed my face in angels breath
Fell asleep in this waking death
Turned the lock with a hidden key
Read the riddle that you set for me

Closed the door to the open sign
In the circle where I walked the line
From the window where I could not see
Read the riddle that you set for me

I made a deal and let the devil run
From the winter to the summer sun
That judge and jury won't set me free
From the riddle that you set for me

Saw the truth through heartfelt lies
Walked adrift in the naked skies
Cast aside with your simple gless
Read the riddle that you set for me

In the silence where I heard the sound
The screams of the lost that were found
As the shadows circle the tree
Read the riddle that you set for me

I made a deal and let the devil run
From the winter to the summer sun
That judge and jury won't set me free
From the riddle that you set for me
