Dylan Herschaft & Evan Kearney, both natives of the rural region around Lancaster, PA, have been best of friends since the Fifth Grade. Sharing many interests is always important in friendship, but Dylan & Evan realized in their college years, that they also shared similar taste in music, favoring more adventurous routes than most people preferred. In winter of 2012, they made a joke to see who could write the most "eargasmic" (a term they picked up somewhere for climactic musical transitions) piece of music between them. Turns out, they tied, and they decided to craft the two songs together. The HK Alliance was born.
Influences for the duo include progressive rock acts Genesis, E.L.P., Yes, King Crimson, The Moody Blues, and The Beatles (undoubtedly progressive since Rubber Soul). Dylan brought to the table influences from bands such as 311, Crowded House, Simon & Garfunkel, and even prog metal band Born of Osiris. Evan brought a love for 20th Century Classical Music including composers Béla Bartók & Maurice Ravel. This pool of forward-thinking musicians continues to influence their work to this day, although it is hard to point a finger in their own work to indicate specific influential derivation.
The type of music that the band writes could be classified most broadly as a form of "Progressive Rock" although it contains heavy use of electronic instruments, enough so that some songs could be considered a form of Progressive Electronica or Acid Jazz. What is different about The HK Alliance is that, unlike most popular music, which contains extreme saturation with influence of The Blues and Rock 'n' Roll, the harmonic structuring and cores of the songs are based on late 19th and early 20th century Classical Music, an era of extreme experimentation and change. If you wanted to describe the "key" to the band's music, the modern-classical harmonic core is certainly The Key.
Enjoy Dylan & Evan's music and be sure to leave feedback. We will post some songs from our first album, released 4 January 2013 (called "The HK Alliance"), as well as drafts and pre-masters of songs in the coming album, or just tracks that were fun to write but won't go on any albums for any reason.
