“3 chords and the truth...”

Sounds simple, but the longer you write music the further you seem to drift away from that ideal.

Being my first post for 2013 this song really sets the tone as I have made the decision to strip my music back to the bare bones. I just felt that I had been hiding behind too much production and too many tricks for too long.

I wrote ‘For All I Know’ while sitting on a near deserted beach in Queensland Australia over the end of year break. It is exactly what you imagine it to be. Paradise. I was just staring into the ocean when a very pensive and meditative feeling came over me - nothing like the ocean to give you a bit of perspective on how insignificant we really are. I basically reached into the ether and pulled the song out.

Is it the greatest song in the world? Not by a long shot. But it is real and that has got to count for something. I meant every word and it is from the heart. And even if you don’t logically understand what I’m singing about I hope you’ll get the emotion of it (I don’t necessarily give a fuck about lyrical truth, emotional truth is far more important in music).

The music is very minimalist being just three basic chords (C, G, D) over and over again. Like many of my songs it builds to a crescendo. I think there is a bit of a gospel flavour in it, but there are echoes of the Velvet Underground, Springsteen and The Rolling Stones. As usual, I kept the mix pretty rough. In fact, almost every instrument was recorded in one take. I must sound like a broken record, but I love rough edges in my music.

Looking forward, I will still plug in and rock out every now and then. I have plenty old and recent tracks up my sleeve. But at least for the next little while I am going back to basics for all my new songs.

Anyway, I’m not ashamed to say that I love ‘For All I Know’. If you don’t that is cool, but just don’t say that I didn’t put my heart into it. I actually recorded another, much more polished version with slightly different lyrics (just me and the guitar). I’ll release it later in the year. It’ll make an interesting comparison.

LYRICS...

For all I know, for all I know
You might be a thief
For all I know, for all I know
You might bring relief
But any day now my heart will be at peace
But any day now my heart will be at peace

For all I know, for all I know
We might be in deep
For all I know, for all I know
We might meet in the street
Cause in this world you got nothing not the shoes on your feet
In this world you got nothing not the shoes on your feet

For all I know
For all I know I know I know
For all I know, for all I know...

For all I know, for all I know
We might be on the beat (I’m still alone now)
For all I know, for all I know
We’re yet to compete (meet you in the street)
But any day now my heart will be at peace
But any day now my heart will be at peace

For all I know
For all I know I know I know
For all I know, for all I know...

Cause in this world you got nothing not the shoes on your feet
Cause in this world you got nothing not the shoes on your feet

For all I know
For all I know I know I know
For all I know, for all I know...
