Need a gift for a gifted musician?
In the tradition of legendary music duos Simon & Garfunkel, Bob Dylan & Joan Baez, and Karen and Richard Carpenter, get ready to fall in love with Australia’s new alt‐folk indie duo The April Maze and their new album TWO.
Combining heart‐melting vocals with a unique blend of cello, guitar, banjo, a stomp box and awash with 70s‐inspired harmonies, Melbourne’s The April Maze are made up of Sivan Agam and Todd Mayhew. Following on from their debut album
‘Recycled Soul’ in 2010, this burgeoning duo move into the next level with their lifeaffirming, exceptional second album TWO, which glows with promise ‐ that this duo have the potential to be the next big thing on the scene.
TWO features warm, stripped‐back recordings which pay homage to Agam and Mayhew’s favourite songwriters including a luminescent performance of The Beatles’ ‘I’ve Just Seen a Face’ and ‘Two of Us’; and a sweet tender re‐telling of ‘And We Danced’ by The Hooters. There’s also quiet, gossamer adaptions of ‘Straight Lines’ by Silverchair and ‘She’s Gone’ (Bob Marley), alongside a dreamy laid‐back rendition of Coldplay’s ‘Strawberry Swing’ which
seeps into your skin. The April Maze’s intimate live takes of these classics make them shine brighter in their raw form with the singer and the songwriter sharing centre stage.
Resting effortlessly cheek‐to‐cheek with the classics are less familiar songs on TWO such as a soaring solo on cello and voice by Agam of ‘Magnolia Tree’ by Truckstop Honeymoon; a rich banjo/guitar/cello fusion of ‘Miss Ohio’ by Americana alt‐country duo Gillian Welch & David Rawlings; followed by smoky renderings of ‘Winter’ by Steve Mayhew and ‘Devil’s Here to Stay’ by James Cisco. Included in TWO are also April Maze originals ‘Between Beers’ and ‘Two Dogs’ which lay testament to their own powerful songwriting capabilities, leaving the
listener simply wanting more.
TWO is an intensely personal and enduring album that is ultimately a love letter to life, love, music and the meaning of home which reads a lot like The April Maze’s life. The real‐life couple met in a share house in Melbourne where they quickly formed a close personal and musical affinity and in 2006 The April Maze was born. Agam and Mayhew then took their debut album ‘Recycled Soul’ on the road with their vintage VW ‘Shirley’ and charmed audiences around the country with their captivating performances, cool psychedelic style
and handmade merchandise.
The April Maze’s sound is for all‐weather ‐ to curl up with on rainy days or to dance to in a
sun‐soaked summer. TWO is an independent release made possible through The April Maze’s adoring fans through a Pledge Music crowd‐funding campaign. When The April Maze’s VW rolls into your town or city, make sure you book a front seat to experience a spellbinding performance of this indie outfit on the rise.
