Live presentation of percussion & electronics piece requested by Outsound for their 11th annual New Music Summit. Ensemble includes Evelyn Davis (transcriptions), Lydia Martín (vibraphone, mark tree & glockenspiel), Tim Black (tympani), April Tang (percussive electronics), Daniel Steffey (thunder sheet, cuíca, cymbal), Shani Aviram (thumb piano) and myself (Arp 2600.)
Live 7/20/12, Community Music Center, Mission District Branch, San Francisco, CA.

The initial, electronic sketch, made up of two "found" sound sources was then transcribed by improviser/performer/composer Evelyn Davis into traditional notation for the small percussion ensemble. The sound sources are pitch and speed altered and with electronic processing. They are sourced from Davis' group Drone Church (February 26, 2012), creating a low end, and James Fei's Advanced Electronics class' performance of John Cage's "Variations II" (February 28, 2012), creating a high end. The processing reveals a third, mid, range.

The three movements are:
first: a performance by the ensemble based on the written score, each player using timers for synch.
second: playback of initial electronic sound score, with speed/pitch variation & live Arp 2600 accompaniment.
third: playback of initial electronic sound score with interpretation/accompaniment by ensemble.

The piece is was initially an attempt to capture the overwhelming experience of looking skyward in a desert at night.

Thanks you Outsound & recordist Michael Zelner.
