Submitting my mix... Fingers, eyes, legs and toes crossed for the win.
Went for a little more of a 'classic' 80s metal sound as I'm fed up with metal processed within an inch of its life. (and I've been listening to a lot of old Megadeth again.)
So, mix notes:
Rawer drums with more natural decay (no triggering here, no no) but still packing a meaty punch. BIG TOMS. BIIIIIIIIGGGGGG TOMMMMMMMMS!
I tried to keep the mix fairly open, plenty of mid but not killing your ears -- with a midrange concession to the rhythm guitars. Shades of djent, dare we say it.
Lots of low end but not so much you're swimming in a mess of sound waves.
Track measured as having a DR of 8! A whole EIGHT! Feast your ears on that headroom.
DAW: Cubase 5.5.3; mixed in 24/44.1; dithered on export.
All mix aspects submixed via groups.
All guitars & bass freshly reamped and recabbed from DI sources.
Drums EQed and gently maximised.
Lots of background FX and layers.
As little EQing as possible, some gentle band lifts and plenty of high passing. Some surgical high Q cutting and boosting where I felt appropriate.
Plenty of automation... ;-)
I use free and/or affordable VSTs wherever practical. There's some wicked freeware out there.
I had fun mixing this! Did you have fun listening?
