Last weekend I bought a new synth: iZotope's Iris. This is a sample of my first patch. The basic drone/wail is a baby's yawp (recorded in 1991, when my older daughter was three months old) stretched in Sound Forge until it's more like a siren (a variant of this was used in the last 45 seconds of Like Unicorns). The imitation surf is from a series of clacks made with a CD storage spindle. The bubbling sound is a plastic ball, like you get toys in from vending machines, with a smaller round object inside (I think my younger daughter made this for me when she was in grade school). The percussive sounds didn't work as they became higher pitched so I cut them off at about middle C.
Iris reminds me of Absynth. In some ways not as deep and controlable but a lot easier to use.
