Sugar Joiko is an American EDM and pop singer-songwriter. She was born on October 16, 1987, in Kenner, Louisiana.
By the age of 8, Joiko began playing the piano by ear and composing her own music. Her mother put her in piano lessons when she turned 9 and she continued to train classically until college. Joiko also studied clarinet and jazz piano for 9 years.
Joiko entered the University of New Orleans studying jazz piano and clarinet. After only one week of enrollment, she was displaced by Hurricane Katrina and moved to Houston where she continued her education at the University of Houston. Joiko graduated with a degree in public relations and advertising with a minor study in music theory.
Joiko is currently notable for her cover videos found on YouTube where she became a global sensation after posting her reinterpretations of popular tunes in both English and Japanese. Her most favored Jpop tune, "Flavor of Life" by Utada Hikaru, scored Joiko an opportunity to represent the United States on Japan's most popular televised singing competition, "Nodojiman: A song for Japan", where she performed live in Tokyo on national television for two seasons in 2011 and 2012.
Joiko has also received an honorable mention by Perez Hilton for her "You Da One" cover by Rihanna, which can also be found on YouTube.
