Straina is a songsmith for the Internet age. Following a decade of honing his chops with Midlands-based band Man Over Board, he has spent the last year experimenting with sounds in his home studio, resulting in a distinctive style that fuses acoustic, trip-hop and indie influences into a warm and accessible whole.
Within two months of putting his first demos up on Soundcloud, he was signed to Reel Me Records, and the initial fruits of his instinctive approach were released in the shape of his debut EP Sobriety Gauge. This foot tapping and head nodding collection of songs highlighted the traits that mark him out as an artist. Compelling melodies and thoughtful lyrics abound, all delivered in a soothing yet gritty voice that could only be Straina’s.
2012 was predominately spent crafting the live show, joined by ex Man Over Board keyboard player Andy Hill, they cleverly and seamlessly use loops, samples and live instruments to create an original and multilayered live experience.
2013 looks set to be the platform for Straina to continue to build on his ever increasing fan base. His new single ‘Raincoat’ is due for release at the end of January. As tuneful as it is experimental, this is an appealing and memorable song that also serves as a promise of future delights. The single also includes a remix by Birmingham’s finest DJ – Sam Redmore.
“this (Raincoat) is one of the best mixes of trip hop and indie rock that I’ve heard" – Calum, The Universal Yellow Keys
