IN OVER YOUR HEAD
Words & Music by Stephen Randall
Hey there drowning man
Think you had a chance to make dry land?
Think again my friend, think again
Life just sucked you in
Just like many better men
You chose the wrong path in the end
CHORUS
And you're in over your head
Yes you're in over your head
You're in over your head
Yes you're in over your head
Did you think we’d understand?
Did you have some master plan?
But the game was never yours to win
You followed the sirens’ song
You were weak and they were strong
Was it worth the suffering?
CHORUS
‘Cos you're in over your head
Yes you're in over your head
You're in over your head
Yes you're in over your head
Hey there drowning man
You’re going down for the very last time
You had your day, but now it’s gone
You were good to me
You were the best that you could be
Just not good enough for everyone
CHORUS
You're in over your head
Yes you're in over your head
You're in over your head
Yes you're in over your head

Thanks to a number of SC folks who helped me clean up an earlier rough(er) mix of this track! I'm still likely to mess with it and replace the file over time with slightly different mixes - which is just what I do :) Lyrics as usual are on the song page.
I loved every part of this. This may be my favorite of yours. Keep cranking out those amazing tuned
@William J. Le Petomane: Thanks William - it's evolving into a less rough mix gradually :)
@Kitchen Party House Band: Thank you kind sir! I've just replaced the original rough mix with a (hopefully) better mix - this process seems to work well for me.
Sounds pretty good for a rough mix. Great songwriting and arrangement too!
Hell the last 5 minutes went by way to quickly!!! A truly lovely ongoing piece of work, Stephen.
@Gus Goad: Ah you put your finger on a conundrum.... I love the cello part but can't find the space for a bass that doesn't get in the way of the cello movements. I'm toying with a mix that boosts the cello so it plays a more dominate role and hopefully that does the trick. Wouldn't want to stress out those bass players!
@Sullys-Songs: Not sure you meant this to post multiple times - but Tyou too!
@Sullys-Songs: Thanks - I'm still trying to tie all those elements together more cohesively. Gotta love how SoundCloud becomes part of the process.
@evenorodd: I took a listen again to the reverb on the acoustics - they sound too dry without it - but there's also an electric rhythm that probably is muddying up those frequencies - I'm going to try a mix without the electric.
No messing here Stephen straight in with a killer hook. It sounds pretty good to me already but being a bass player I reckon it could do with a little more bottom end movement (but I'm biased!)
another good strong song Steven - the violin break in the middle works well, I would agree - very well done!
I definitely hear more clarity. I think you should consider taking the reverb off the acoustic guitar.
@:finn - slide guitarist: Thanks Finn. Coming from a virtuoso such as you, that's a mighty fine compliment! I'll have to spend more time with Eels and Aimee Mann - I like them both but hadn't connected any similarities before.
You write really great tunes Stephen, brilliant work. Reminds me a bit of Eels and Aimee Mann, in best possible way
@telefan: Well I'm still polishing it, so hopefully there's some more shine coming!
@Phil McWalter: Ha - thanks Phil! I've played with the bottom-end in this new mix which I'll keep replacing until I'm happy with it (btw - old versions are sometimes not cleared from SC cache on iOS devices, should be ok on their main site) - I've also cleaned up some parts that were muddying up the lower frequencies. It bottom-end could probably do with more boosting, but I need to live with it a bit more. I'll experiment with a tempo change, but I'm not so sure about that - My ballads always seem to end up around 80 bpm, so I was almost forcing this to be different. Thanks for the input.
@Jerry Carlson: Thanks for that input - there's certainly potential to shorten the song - and I might do that but while I would love to think this was single material, I don't quite have the stomach to snip this (yet) :)
@telefan: Thank you sir. The tele is in there somewhere :) btw - I tend to replace my tracks with alternative mixes over time (as I get used to hearing the songs in a different context and I'm not so close to them), so hopefully when you come back here, you might notice some differences.
@evenorodd: Your private message was really helpful - I've already uploaded a (hopefully) better rough mix - edited prefade reverb on some of the tracks, and cleaned up some of the string parts that got in the way...
Strong work Stephen! I can 't wait to hear the final mix!
Love the chorus! The whole song is good ,but the chorus just shines!
I wish my finished tracks were as good as your rough mixes! Great vox, (love the b vox) I would very slightly increase the tempo, load the bottom end up a bit more and sit back and think hey that's pretty good! :-)
