About

Steve Baker, Producer/Guitarist, London, UK

Guitars, guitars, guitars.....and some more guitars! With a few other devices thrown in (notably, a Line 6 DL4 looping pedal).

All the tracks here are emissions from the venerable 'Steam Abacus' - once a wheezing old pentium-powered antique (Windows 98SE!, mainly utilising Cubase VST 3.7, Cool Edit Pro and T-Racks), now resurrected as an only-slightly-antiquated younger specimen (Windows XP, Cubase SX, et al).

Much is initially recorded direct to minidisc before being edited/compiled on the Steam Abacus.

Some older tracks even started life on Compact Cassette.

State-of-the-art this ain't!

@neonicecream: Thanks, I love Tool (though I'm not familiar with ALL their extensive back catalogue). If I remember correctly, this wasn't played using an e-bow - just overdriven guitar through a raft of delays with the initial attack of the note controlled by a foot operated volume pedal.

@Honney-Bayes Productions: Cheers, Nigel. I've been having random intermittent gremlins that I've just managed to trace to a dodgy preamp valve. I've now temporarily replaced it with an old one I have knocking around - but I've had to totally re-tweak all my EQ settings (it sounds that different). And I'll have to go through it all again when I put a new valve in there - keeping on top of guitar tone is a bit like constantly painting the Forth Bridge sometimes. :I

@Penguin Fawkes: Not so much 'getting to grips with' as 'finding ways to avoid'. The backing groove was something I came up with a while ago in order to check out various bass amp VSTs. I'd totally forgotten about it until yesterday. :)

@Deeply Dazzled Donkey: I'm trying to find some enthusiasm for the computer but I find it difficult to combine 'playing head' and 'computer head'. I'm fine if it's purely post-production. I'm in the early stages of getting a new ambient psychedelia recording project started - it looks like the way ahead with that will be live looping and recording onto a Yamaha AW4416 hardware recorder. Then the tracks can be imported into Cubase afterwards for production.
