wow this is so cool. if it was truly an accident you made the most of it-- i love this part, all the way through about 1.30. that kind of rough edge to the arpy musical sound is awesome.. what kind of instrument is this?
-
@mostlyfodder: The sick bell is Ableton's collision with some effects. The rest is Battery 3.. with a Massive base.

Ok we still need to fix the drums. :)
-
@Spuddley: maybe a more powerful kick pattern?
-
@django365: Yeah. i think the drums need a lot of work overall. Trouble is, we would need to break out each track and really get into it. This would require more effort than I am ready for at this point. I just piddle around with live for a few minutes at a time these days. Working nearly all the time. Maybe we could just try putting an additional kick with more punch for now?
-
@Spuddley: Maybe when I get Live 8 it will be easier to collaborate?

I like the mood. Maybe trying to add elements to the arrangement might improve it? Cheers.
-
@narcofunk: hmmm ironically I was intentionally scaling back. I guess I can fit more in, but I think I might extend it to do so. I wanted to let some of the quieter details through.
-
@Spuddley: Plus my laptop simly cant take much more. I left my power supply to my ext sound card back home. No ASIO for me. What elements did you have in mind?
-
@Spuddley: Well yeah, depends on the direction you want to take. I was thinking about some articulated pad texturing in the background for example, fading in and out and maybe chainging parts with other things. Or maybe some rhythmic effects. Ever heard Murcof's Cosmos album? It's totally different from this, but, speaking of arrangements, it can be really inspiring.

It always is a good idea to try this kind of things with DAWs imho, so props for that. In this case, maybe the drum section is too repetitive, it could use some pauses or a different pattern. It is important to change patterns and rhythms often in instrumental rock(ish) tracks.
-
@narcofunk: You are very right about the drums.

I love the delay here, how did you get it? Its really obvious the work thats gone into this, I think you have more patience than me with the programming and mixing, I just want to get things out there, but you make sure theyre pretty damn perfect before you do. I love the bass in this thing, im working only with acoustic guitar at the moment, hence my current theme. Top tune.
-
@chezceleste: The delay is abelton live's pingpong delay set at 25% wet on the 3rd beat. Although I do put some effort into equalizing the different parts, I don't feel like I know what I am doing yet. There many here that craft each note so much more, it is humbling. I do think your tracks are excellent. You are a better musician than I. You also have a good feel for how to create mood and interest with acoustic instruments that makes me jealous. You might want to pick up a bass and see what happens with your stuff. It makes my life a lot easier when I try and achieve some balance.
- chezceleste on April 17, 2009 22:02
@Spuddley: I sorely miss my bass, it was my first proper instrument, and out of the ones I have, its the best quality (fender aerodyne) but im living in Rome at the mo, and could only bring the one geetar. I miss things like distortion and delay and noise. sigh.
-
@Spuddley: Oops. I lied, the dry/wet varies between 25% and 40%

I enjoy the sound, but i think the song is a bit repetitive. I have the same problem, i know how it is :) Try changing moods, gettin' a little sick or a little angry with the drumming or the distortions, you have endless possibilities. The synth also could be better, it kinda stands out and doesn't fit the rest too much.
-
@narcofunk: I think I will mess with the drums a bit. Here is the problem. I am lazy, and in a hurry. The synth in akoustik piano. perhaps I should try a lead?
-
@Spuddley: Maybe a synth, maybe some distortion, maybe some glitchin'.. i dunno, i would just try :) And btw i was talkin' about the synths that starts around 3:50, it's a bit too dry/rough, maybe some further processing, like envelope filter and delay, would make it sound more convincing.
-
@Spuddley: A quicker but brief piano solo from time to time could give this track a lot more body

Man. Don´t say things like " I am posting pencil sketches". I listened to this song and I read your words (leaving th etown) and so I say: It is a great work! You describe your situation and this situation postulates a groove without break and changes. You have stress and youe music also has stress. So you did not paint a picture but told in music, what you tried to write with letters. This track is perfect, because perfect is, what is reality. (And the reality is perfect?)

@Michael Klatte: Thanks for the encouragement. I do think I am a long way from where I want to be. But you are right. At some point you have to respect the creative process enough to stop re-engineering and let others listen. After all, this is art, not engineering.
-

Good luck, and try to not be too hasty to finish this, you've got plenty of time. In the meantine, try to listen a lot of different things to understand how others work their music out. Considering your inclination towards post-rock, i'd say give a listen to people who did it differently, like Long Fin Killie and Storm & Stress(they were not instrumental bands, but they can be of great inspiration). Cheers!
-
@narcofunk: Thanks for the comments. You are right about the hurried effort. Time is a little short for me. I am about to leave town for a while (a long while) so for some reason I felt like wrapping some things up before I go. I am leaving my guitars behind, so this should force me into a synth mode, which should cause me to get more into engineering the grooves, instead of just playing along. I hope to dig into these synths that I have spent all this money on! Thanks again.

You're welcome. Good luck!

if i may be honest here; the guitar sound here repeats in a way that left me wanting just a little bit more. maybe add some variation to it? on the contrary, there's a repeating segment of guitar sound a bit later in the track, around 1:30, that does totally work for me.
- mostlyfodder on April 27, 2009 18:51
@mostlyfodder: yes it starts at around 1:33 and i really like how that part kicks off with the bell!
-
@mostlyfodder: Thanks. I like the bell, although I had a debate about whether or not a bell was cool. In the end I decded that I really don't have to be cool :)
-
@mostlyfodder: Thanks for the feedback. For some reason I missed this before. You are right about the guitar tracks. Part of my trouble is inexperience... which is part of why I am posting these. Plus, I do really need to work on my guitar skills.

I think the low end might be overwhelming your mix, causing it to squash under compression. Try putting an eq on the boomy kick and roll off everything below 50hz. Musically the track is great!
-

really a nice, positive, uplifting track. about that baby at the end.. i do like it, but might prefer it somewhere in the middle of the track, or not at the very ending, only because the main melody of the song is so strong, i want the track to end on it. maybe you could add another 20 seconds of the really nice musical bits onto the end, with the baby sound as a bit of a break. anyways, a very nice track i enjoyed it. and as i write this i'm hearing the stuttery bits of your next track (faucet) and must comment on it- love that!
-
@mostlyfodder: You are probably right. It was late at night, and I got this funny idea that the song could be about birth, so I tagged the end with the baby. Not the strongest ending (I am not good at those anyway). Unfortunately, it will be a while before I can change ny of the guitar parts. My electric is many miles away.
- mostlyfodder on May 08, 2009 03:42
@Spuddley: oh cool so that is your playing? it's nice. but with a good sample editor/sequencer you don't need to wait until you get your electric back to make changes to the sound :)
