Rolfe uses some of the same methods that Bach himself employed in constructing The Musical Offering, including inversion, retrograde, and retrograde inversion. Most of Freddy’s Dead derives from the third movement of The Musical Offering’s Trio Sonata, which Rolfe has variously sped up and squeezed into down beats (bass clef) or off beats (treble). Meanwhile, a very slow version of the theme cycles alongside, with all intervals rising. These two ideas—short notes fast and jumpy, long notes slow and steady—are sustained throughout the piece until its coda.

    For violin, cello and piano.

This work was premiered on April 22, 2004 at the 'Freddy's Tune' concert presented by Soundstreams at CBC's Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto, Canada.
