Fresh from the critical acclaim garnered by his March 2010 release Brass, Bass & Wires Brian May aka DJ Delay aka Beam Up aka Sonical drops his heavy dub basslines on Terra Sonica. Space is the place, and dub is his mission on this new offering and in the best of traditions takes us all by stealth. Dub is not a genre, but studio technique, coupled with a sensitivity to rhythm. Anything and everything can and will be dubbed. From echo and delay, to reverb and rewind, Beam Up bares his dub soul for all to see, with a nod to dubstep, electro and everything in between. This is not an album of simple pullbacks, mashing and dropping of lyrics....in his own words:

“The spirit of dub continues to drive all the music I make. This album takes all those qualities of space, bass, and borderless nature to shape all of the tracks, whether they be afrobeat, electrodancehall, dubstep, downbeat or simply original reggae roots”

And his pedigree is impeccable. From his first releases in Australia in 1996 with the band he co founded - High Pass Filter, to sound installations, festival appearances and residencies in Japan, Berlin and Melbourne have found him tweaking and mashing on a global scale. Terra Sonica is a distillation of all this experience and more.

Opening cut Abeokuta Nights is an expansion of a track he wrote for Systa bb's radio show The Good, The Dub & The Global on RRR in Melbourne where reggae roots frontman Mista Savona did his best Herbie Hancock contribution on keyboards and the funk flowed. Rocker sees Cassawarrior from Black Jesus Experience take to the mic in a dubwise bone shaking tune followed by Dipper as a summer attack. If you thought that dancehall didn't involve bellydancing, think again as Nahfader takes the booty to the dancefloor followed by Roller in straight ahead dub. Dalequedale is his mongrelisation of the Spanish word meaning “let's do it” in a chilled elephant walk stylee and The Gleaning is a heartfelt dubstep meditation on the practice of sourcing items that are perfectly usable, but which today's consumer society disposes in an effort to buy more and more stuff. Featuring the voice of one of the NYC underground train network residents, as depicted by Marc Singers epic documentary Dark Days. He breathes air and space into the tune to counteract the subway vibe.

Terra Sonica pushes the boundaries of dub and digs into the studio techniques that add light and shade to so many of his previous releases. Outside the named guests, he contributes all the instruments, trumpet, percussion, kalimba, field recordings and more , which lends a deep organic flava to the music.

If you only grab one dub album this year, this is the one to show you the possibilities of the music. Listen Up!
